Community Shield: Crystal Palace defeat Liverpool 3-2 on penalties

Crystal Palace pulled off a stunning upset at Wembley on Sunday, beating Premier League champions Liverpool on penalties to win the 2025 FA Community Shield.

The match ended 2–2 after regulation time before Palace clinched victory 3–2 in the shootout.

Liverpool struck early through debutant Hugo Ekitike in the fourth minute, capitalising on an assist from Florian Wirtz.

Palace responded when Virgil van Dijk fouled Ismaila Sarr in the box, allowing Jean-Philippe Mateta to convert the resulting penalty.

Jeremie Frimpong put Liverpool back ahead with a looping cross that clipped in off the post around the 21st minute.

In a dramatic turnaround, Palace equalised via a late strike from Sarr in the 77th minute, forcing the game into a penalty shootout that would seal the Shield.

Goalkeeper Dean Henderson emerged as Palace’s hero during spot-kicks, saving efforts from Alexis Mac Allister and Harvey Elliott after Mohamed Salah missed Liverpool’s opener.

Sub Justin Devenny then dispatched the winning penalty to spark wild celebrations for Palace.

Manager Oliver Glasner has now secured another Wembley triumph following their historic 2025 FA Cup win.
