CSO calls for reactivation of SBMC in Enugu schools

The Civil Society Action Coalition on Education for All , CSACEFA, has expressed its commitment towards supporting the Enugu State government in ensuring school children go back to school on Mondays.

CSACEFA gave the commitment on Monday, when its State Coordinator, Dr. Tobe Agujiobi led a familiarisation visit to the newly constituted board.
Dr. Agujiobi said the continued Monday sit at home which is depriving school children of valuable teaching hours is a violation of their right to education.
He said CSACEFA has been at the forefront of advocating quality and inclusive education and was borne out of the need to have a voice that will interface between people and government for improved education and the implementation of Universal Basic Education.

Dr. Agujiobi who was received by a board member at ENSUBEB, Dr. Stephanie Ngene said the visit was to intimate the board of CSACEFA activities in the state and explore possible areas of collaboration and partnership.
The CSACEFA state coordinator called on ENSUBEB to reactivate School-based Management Committee, SBMC, which he said has been effective and result oriented.

He argued that giving back schools to the community to manage will instill a sense of ownership.
Dr. Agujiobi who was accompanied on the familiarisation visit by Chief Godwin Agujiokah also advocated for training, retraining of school teachers to enhance pupil-teacher relationship, improve their passion for teaching, ensure punctuality to work and commitment to duty, as well as elicit their full commitment.
Responding, a board member of ENSUBEB, Dr. Stephanie Ngene said the board would welcome any idea or initiative that would help in returning school children back to school on Mondays.
According to Dr. Ngene outside the usual public holidays, the Monday Sit-At-Home is causing school children loss of valuable instructional hours.
She said the state government has put in place effective security measures to ensure the safety of school children and called on parents and guardians to take their children and wards to school on Mondays.
