The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority has announced that an elderly passenger was deplaned earlier on Wednesday at a Nigerian airport after refusing to comply with a seat reassignment request made by the cabin crew.
The agency’s spokesperson, Michael Achimugu, made this known in a post on his X handle on Wednesday.
The NCAA publicist refused to give the name of the airline involved, claiming that he only cited the matter to educate passengers.
According to Achimugu, the passenger had been assigned a seat next to an emergency exit. For safety and regulatory reasons, passengers seated in exit rows are required to meet specific physical and behavioural criteria, including the ability to assist in an emergency.
He added that the cabin crew requested that the passenger change seats, but he reportedly refused, despite being briefed on the importance of the switch.
Tensions escalated when the passenger allegedly threatened a flight attendant on two occasions, stating that he would slap her.
In response, Achimugu stated that “the pilot contacted airport security, including Air Force personnel stationed at the airport, to intervene.”
The passenger then requested to speak with officials from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.
He added that NCAA Consumer Protection Officers were brought on board to help de-escalate the situation.
“After discussions, the passenger was informed that, due to the threats made and his refusal to comply with safety protocols, the pilot had decided not to allow him to remain on the flight.
“Airport security and NCAA officials escorted the passenger back to the terminal. Officials say he later understood the seriousness of the situation and agreed to cooperate. He is expected to travel on a later flight this evening.”
The NCAA, however, emphasised the importance of mutual respect and cooperation between passengers and crew, particularly when safety protocols are involved.
“Threats of violence against cabin crew are unacceptable. The safety and comfort of all passengers must be a shared priority,” the NCAA spokesperson stated.
He further encouraged passengers who are dissatisfied with airline service to file a formal complaint via the NCAA Consumer Protection Department at cpd.ncaa.gov.ng.
