Enugu CP orders manhunt for attackers of Police DRS team

The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa has ordered tactical and intelligence units of the Command to intensify an ongoing manhunt for the fleeing assailants suspected to be members of the IPOB/ESN who attacked  a Police Distress Response Squad (DRS) team along Agbani Road in Enugu.

According to the Enugu State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, the assailants opened fire on the police team on Thursday night without provocation while the officers were on duty.

The operatives reportedly returned fire, forcing the attackers to flee the scene with varying degrees of gunshot injuries.

Ndukwe said during the exchange of gunfire, the police operational vehicle was set ablaze.

He confirmed that two officers who sustained severe gunshot wounds and were rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention were later pronounced dead by medical personnel.

The statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer, said the CP directed operatives to deploy all available resources and actionable intelligence to track down and arrest those responsible for the attack.

The police also confirmed the recovery of a Lexus RX 330 Jeep allegedly snatched earlier from its owner by the hoodlums and used during the attack.

The vehicle was recovered with multiple bullet holes, indicating it was involved in the gun battle.

CP Giwa appealed to members of the public with credible information that could aid in the arrest of the suspects to promptly share such information with the Police.

He assured residents that the Command remains determined and committed to ensuring that those behind the attack are brought to justice and that criminal elements do not undermine public safety in the state.

The Enugu State Police Command reiterated its resolve to maintain law and order and urged citizens to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as investigations and manhunt operations continue.
