.In a bid to extend the decongestion of traffic to various local government areas in the state, the state government has set up an Inter-ministerial committee made up of all the relevant Ministries, Departments and Agencies such the ministry of transport, the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Police, the Army, the State and Federal Emergency Management Agencies, as well as the Local government chairmen to assist in managing traffic in every nook and cranny of the council areas.
The State Commissioner for Transport, Dr Obi Ozor made this known on Friday while briefing journalists on the outcome of the state executive council meeting presided over by governor Peter Mbah at the government house Enugu.
Our government house correspondent Fred Nnaji reports that the initiative is in tandem with the governor’s commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment.
The Transport Commissioner said the Local government chairmen are to inaugurate 20-man volunteer traffic workers to assist the State Traffic Management Agency, ESTMA, in controlling vehicles in the entire state.
On the rumour making the rounds about recruitment of ESTMA workers, Dr Ozor said the process for application and recruitment will be officially communicated to the public, stating that the ministry only brought in about 40 Man O’ war volunteers whose job is to ensure that commercial buses and tricycles enter their parks before loading passengers and goods.
He expressed optimism that the ministry will be recruiting few hundreds of traffic wardens by 2024 in order to create employment for the teeming youths of the state.
