…. RECOVER FIREARM AFTER ATTACK ON OPERATIVES IN AKPAKUME COMMUNITY
Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command have arrested thirteen male suspects and recovered a locally made single-barrelled gun following an armed attack on police personnel at Akpakume community in Udi Local Government Area of the state.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the incident occurred in the early hours of November 3, 2025, when operatives stormed the community to arrest suspects linked to conspiracy, unlawful possession of firearms, and cult-related activities.
However, the police team was ambushed by the suspects and their cohorts, who opened fire on the operatives, injuring some officers and damaging vehicles, including a police operational van. The operatives responded swiftly with superior firepower, forcing the assailants to flee with gunshot wounds.
In a follow-up operation, the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, led a team of senior officers to Akpakume on November 4 for an on-the-spot assessment of the situation. The CP expressed concern over the level of destruction in the community, noting that the hoodlums had destroyed houses, shops, and farmlands, and killed livestock belonging to residents.
Preliminary investigations, according to the police, indicate that the violent acts were linked to an ongoing intra-communal crisis in the area.
While urging law-abiding citizens to remain calm and continue their normal activities, CP Giwa assured that the Command would not relent until all perpetrators of the attack and other related crimes are apprehended and brought to justice.
The Police Command has meanwhile intensified efforts to track down the fleeing assailants and restore peace to the troubled community.
