The Enugu State Police Command says it has made significant strides in crime fighting, recording 5,176 arrests and 113 rescues of kidnapped victims within the last six months.
Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, disclosed this on Thursday during a press briefing at the State Command Headquarters, Enugu, to review the Command’s performance since his assumption of duty on March 11, 2025.
According to him, suspects arrested include 98 for armed robbery, 87 for kidnapping, 50 for murder, 16 for unlawful possession of firearms, 11 for rape/defilement, 122 for cultism, and 4,792 for other offences ranging from theft and vandalism to human trafficking.
He noted that 105 firearms, 271 rounds of ammunition, and 71 vehicles were also recovered during the period. “Our proactive and intelligence-driven approach has yielded impressive results, including dismantling multiple kidnapping, robbery, and trafficking syndicates,” Giwa said.
Among the high-profile cases was the arrest of an 18-year-old suspect, Obodoagu Ikediekpere, for the kidnap and murder of his 5-year-old cousin, as well as the capture of ritual murder suspect Obieze Levi, alias ‘E Dey Pray E Dey Show’, and two accomplices.
The CP also highlighted the Command’s success in ensuring a crime-free 2025 Nigerian Bar Association Annual General Conference in Enugu, which hosted over 20,000 participants. He attributed the feat to strategic coordination with sister security agencies, the Enugu Forest Guards, and the Neighbourhood Watch Group.
He further disclosed that relative peace has returned to communities in Isi-Uzo and Uzo-Uwani LGAs following joint security deployments against herders-farmers clashes, adding that violent acts linked to secessionist agitation have also reduced.
Looking ahead to the busy “ember months,” Giwa assured residents that robust security measures are already in place to sustain public safety.
He commended Governor Peter Mbah for his support, sister agencies for collaboration, and law-abiding citizens for providing intelligence. He also urged continued cooperation to make Enugu safer.
“Together, we can achieve and sustain a secure, peaceful, and thriving environment for everyone in Enugu State,” the CP said.
