The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has commissioned a newly constructed Police Division in Affa Community, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, reaffirming the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to expanding police presence and bringing policing closer to the people.
The commissioning ceremony, which took place on Tuesday, January 14, 2026, marked the formal opening of the Affa Police Division. Speaking through the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, the IGP described the establishment of the Division as part of sustained efforts to enhance security nationwide, particularly in rural communities.
According to the IGP, the new Division is a deliberate and strategic intervention aimed at addressing existing policing gaps in Affa Community and the wider Udi axis of Enugu State.
He emphasized that the initiative would help ensure that the security and safety needs of residents are adequately met.
The IGP also called on community leaders and residents to support the Division through moral, material, and logistical assistance to enable officers and men to commence operations effectively and without delay.
He further charged the pioneer Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and personnel posted to the Division to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and respect for citizens’ fundamental rights. While urging them to be firm, courageous, and proactive in crime prevention and control, the IGP stressed the importance of emotional intelligence, restraint, and social sensitivity in their dealings with the public.
The police chief warned officers against all forms of financial impropriety and conduct capable of bringing the Force into disrepute, specifically cautioning against the practice known as “crying down credit,” which he noted is strongly prohibited within the Nigeria Police Force.
The event attracted several dignitaries, including the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Uche Ugwu, and the Chairman of Udi Local Government Area, Hon. Hyginus Agu. Traditional rulers, community leaders, other key stakeholders, and senior police officers were also in attendance.
The commissioning of the Affa Police Division is expected to strengthen security architecture in the area and deepen collaboration between the police and host communities in Enugu State.
