Kun Khalifat will welcome Enyimba to the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri on Sunday (today) in what promises to be a significant encounter in a newly established derby between two sides from the South-East region, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.
The fixture will mark Kun Khalifat’s first official home match in their home base in Owerri since their relocation from Aba, and it will be the club’s first-ever Oriental Derby to be played in the NPFL at home.
The newly promoted Kun Khalifat have endured a harsh introduction to life in the top flight, struggling to find rhythm despite flashes of promise.
After starting the season with a commendable goalless derby draw against Rangers International in Enugu, they have since recorded just one win from eight matches, a 3–1 home victory over El-Kanemi Warriors in mid-September.
Their campaign has been defined by inconsistency, defensive frailties, and a lack of cutting edge in the final third.
In their last outing, Kun Khalifat managed a 1–1 draw away to Niger Tornadoes, which halted a two-game losing streak following defeats to Shooting Stars and Barau FC.
They have now gone three matches without a win and have failed to keep a clean sheet in six consecutive games, leaving them rooted to the bottom of the table with just five points from seven fixtures.
Head coach Uzoho Obinna will be banking on the return to familiar territory in Owerri to inspire his players, as the club expressed optimism and declared their readiness over the venue switch against the most successful team in Nigeria’s league history.
The People’s Elephants have started the 2025/26 NPFL campaign impressively under Stanley Eguma, collecting 13 points from their opening seven matches.
Their solid start has been built on defensive discipline, having conceded just three goals so far, and a balanced attack that has seen goals spread across the team.
They have won three and drawn four of their league matches this term, maintaining composure even in difficult away grounds.
They drew 0–0 with Rivers United last weekend in Aba, following a 1–1 result against Ikorodu City in Lagos. Before those matches, they earned back-to-back wins against Bendel Insurance and Bayelsa United, signalling the consistency and maturity of a side with championship ambition.
While Enyimba’s current form highlights their title credentials, Kun Khalifat’s plight reflects the challenges of a debutant team finding its footing in the NPFL.
With only one win and five goals scored so far, the hosts must find efficiency in front of goal if they are to trouble their immediate past landlords. However, their fighting spirit at home could provide an edge, particularly with the Owerri crowd expected to rally behind them.
