Some parents in Niger State have handed over their children to the police after they allegedly killed a 10-year-old herder, Abubakar Lawal, and injured another during an attack in the Karaku community, Rafi Local Government Area.
The Niger State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident on Friday, describing it as a case of suspected culpable homicide.
According to Abiodun, the attack occurred on August 11 when Lawal and nine-year-old boy were returning from grazing their sheep.
They were allegedly confronted by four minors, Aliyu (10), Abdullahi (six), Maryam (10), and Jika (four).
The police spokesperson stated that during the altercation, Aliyu reportedly struck the victims with a stick, leaving them with severe injuries.
He said the victims were rushed to the Kagara General Hospital, where Lawal was confirmed dead while Umar is receiving treatment.
Abiodun said the parents of the suspects brought them to the police station on August 14, adding that the case was under investigation and would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Minna for further action.
He said, “On August 12, 2025 at about 7.30am a report was received that, on August 11, 2025 at about 5.30pm, two children named Abubakar Lawal (10) and Umar (nine) were returning home from animal grazing along Karaku forest.
“The report further indicated that some minors who are Aliyu (10), Abdullahi (6), Maryam (10) and Jika (four) blocked and engaged Hassan and Umar in a fight.
“In the course of the fight, Aliyu allegedly hit Hassan and Umar with a stick, the two victims sustained serious injuries and they were rushed to general hospital Kagara for medical attention, but unfortunately Lawal was later confirmed dead while Umar is still receiving treatment.
“Further investigation is progress, and the juvenile offenders are under questioning with the presence of their parents who brought them to the Police station today 14th August 2025. The unfortunate incident will soon be transferred to SCID Minna for further action.”
