Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has said security is a top priority for his administration because it is essential for progress.
Okpebholo shared this on his verified X handle on Monday, revealing that he met with security chiefs and key stakeholders to discuss ways to improve security across the state.
In recent weeks, clashes between farmers and suspected produce thieves in Ovia have reportedly led to 22 deaths.
Kidnapping cases have also increased, with the killing of 21-year-old Seminarian Peter Andrew of St. Peter Catholic Church in Ivukwa Community, Etsako East Local Government Area.
He was abducted on March 3, along with Rev. Fr. Peter Ekweli, who was later released.
During the security meeting, the governor said discussions focused on proactive steps to tackle security challenges, restore peace and ensure that residents can live and work without fear.
Okpebholo stated, “Earlier today (Monday), I convened a Security Council Meeting with security chiefs and key stakeholders to deliberate on strategies to enhance security across Edo State.
“Our discussions focused on proactive measures to tackle security challenges, restore peace and ensure that citizens can live, work, and conduct business without fear.
Meanwhile, protests over the alleged killing of a suspected “Yahoo boy” by the police last week continued on Monday.
A resident told The PUNCH that the incident happened last Tuesday when police at a checkpoint stopped a car driven by the deceased. The young man reportedly ran away, and an officer shot him.
The resident explained, “The boy, suspected to be involved in Internet fraud known as Yahoo Yahoo, was stopped by the police, but he opened his car and took to his heels.
“One of the officers shot him, and he died. His brother, who was in the car with him, was arrested and taken to the state command in Benin.
“Members of the community have been protesting since then. Today (Monday), they moved to Ambrose Alli University, hoping students would join, but the school is not in session.
“Hopefully, this matter will be resolved soon as the protesters continue blocking the major road in the area.”
