Ondo varsity slashes tuition by 50%, excludes medicine, law

The management of Wesley University, Ondo, Ondo State, has announced a 50 per cent reduction in tuition fees for some programmes, excluding medicine and surgery, nursing, law, and select medical and allied health courses.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Samuel Obeka, announced the university’s 14th convocation ceremony on Saturday.

He said the decision to lower fees in some departments was aimed at easing the financial burden on students and their parents.

“In response to prevailing economic challenges and in line with Wesley University’s commitment to affordable, accessible and inclusive education, management has approved a moderate downward review of general school fees for the 2025/2026 academic session,” Obeka said.

The VC, however, explained that the university “slightly increased” fees for certain programmes to sustain high academic standards and meet the rigorous requirements of professional accreditation bodies.

“A slight upward adjustment has been applied exclusively to programmes in medicine and surgery, nursing, law, and select medical and allied health disciplines. These adjustments are essential to maintain specialised facilities, faculty expertise, laboratory equipment, clinical training, and regulatory benchmarks required for these professional programmes.

“This balanced fee review reflects the university’s dual mandate of compassion and quality assurance, prioritising affordability without compromising academic excellence and global competitiveness,” he added.

Obeka also noted that the university, owned by the Methodist Church of Nigeria, has recorded an unprecedented rise in student enrolment following the successful approval of new academic programmes by the National Universities Commission.
