Pope Francis warns against the use of AI to replace human communication

 

Pope Francis has said Artificial Intelligence can never replace the wisdom of the human heart, and urged humanity to cultivate wisdom of the heart in the age of Artificial Intelligence.

The Pope stated this in his message for the 2024 world communication day which is the 58th edition with the theme: “Artificial Intelligence and Wisdom of the heart; towards a fully human communication”

The message of the Pope was read out on Sunday by the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev Calistus Onaga in his homily during a special church service organised for the media organisations, held at the Holy ghost Cathedral Ogui Enugu.

The Holy father said AI is radically affecting the world of information and communication, and through it, certain foundations of life in society, adding that these changes affect everyone.

He said although the term ‘Artificial Intelligence’ has replaced the term ‘Machine Learning’, the very use of the word ‘intelligence’ can prove misleading.

The Pope further advocated regulation of the Artificial Intelligence, saying wisdom can help humanity to put systems of Artificial Intelligence at the service of a fully human communication.

Also speaking on the ongoing demolitions around Ogbete main market, the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Most Rev Calistus Onaga who encouraged the people to support the government, condemned the rate people take to the social media to spread fake news with the use of Artificial Intelligence about the action of the government.

Addressing the media, the director, social communications, catholic Diocese of Enugu, Rev Fr Anthony Aneke said the declaration endorsed by the Vatican includes Transparency, Inclusion, Accountability, Impartiality, Reliability, Security and Privacy.

The priest said the Pope emphasized that while artificial intelligence can be a formidable tool to facilitate communication and exchange information, it cannot provide the uniquely human wisdom needed to promote the good of people and their communities.

After the church service, there was a lecturer on the impact of Artificial Intelligence on human communication with Mr Francis Uka, the General Manager of Udoka FM, as the guest lecturer.

The high point of the event was march past by various media organisations and presentation of a newspaper by the ESUT mass communication students.
