The Nigerian Army has dismissed allegations that its troops are harassing residents of Ochon Community in Obubra Local Government Area, Cross River State, amid a lingering land dispute with neighboring Alesi Community in Ikom Local Government Area.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Lieutenant Colonel Olabisi Olalekan Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, 82 Division, described the reports as “false, misleading, and clearly aimed at discrediting the efforts of troops working tirelessly to maintain peace in the area.”
According to the Army, soldiers of 245 Battalion were deployed to the general area strictly for internal security operations to protect lives, secure critical infrastructure, and maintain public order in line with constitutional provisions adding that the intervention followed renewed clashes between the two communities on September 19, 2025.
“The troops responded swiftly to prevent escalation and restore normalcy across the affected areas of Ikom and Obubra Local Government Areas,” the statement read.
The 82 Division reaffirmed its neutrality, insisting it has no interest in the ownership or control of land in dispute. “Our mandate is solely to maintain peace and forestall any breakdown of law and order that could endanger lives and property,” Ayeni stated.
The Army further urged residents, community leaders, and stakeholders to embrace peaceful and lawful means of resolving differences while assuring the public of its commitment to professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights.
Members of the public were encouraged to provide credible information on any security threats or possible misconduct by personnel through established reporting channels for prompt action.
The 82 Division pledged continued collaboration with security agencies, civil authorities, and traditional institutions to sustain peace and security across Cross River State.
