Enugu Govt Distances Self from Trainee’s Suspension, Reaffirms Healthcare Reforms

The Enugu State Government has denied any involvement in the reported suspension of a health assistant trainee, Miss Stella Makuochukwu Eze, by Ezzy Healthcare College, describing the issue as an internal matter of a private institution.

In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Dr. Malachy Agbo, the government clarified that Miss Eze is neither a student of any state-owned health institution nor an employee of the Enugu State Civil Service.

According to the statement, her suspension was reportedly due to a breach of the college’s code of conduct, stressing that the state government has no role in the disciplinary processes of private institutions.

“The Government is not involved in the internal affairs or disciplinary processes of the private college and is only conveying information as made available to it,” the statement read.

However, the government disclosed that it has engaged with the college and other relevant stakeholders following concerns generated by a viral video involving the trainee and a colleague.

Reaffirming its commitment to healthcare development, the administration of Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah highlighted ongoing reforms in the sector aimed at improving service delivery across the state.

The government noted that it has begun the rollout of 260 Type-2 Primary Healthcare Centres across the state’s political wards to enhance access to quality care.

It also revealed that over 2,250 primary healthcare workers have been recruited to strengthen services at the grassroots.

In addition, rehabilitation works are ongoing in several general hospitals, including Uwani General Hospital, where the reported incident allegedly occurred.

The statement further outlined improvements in health training institutions, citing the recent reaccreditation of the ESUT College of Medicine, which now has an increased admission quota of 350 for Medicine and Surgery.

It also pointed to the near completion of the 300-bed Enugu International Hospital, designed as a super-specialist facility to reduce medical tourism, alongside major infrastructural upgrades at the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH), Parklane.

The government urged residents to utilise healthcare facilities within their communities and reiterated its commitment to accountability, continuous improvement, and quality healthcare delivery.
