The Deputy National Chairman (South) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Ben Nwoye, has attributed the party’s victory in the Enugu North Senatorial District by-election to the support and encouragement received from the APC national leadership and the conducive political atmosphere provided by Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah.
Reacting to the outcome of Saturday’s by-election, Nwoye expressed delight over the overwhelming victory recorded by the APC candidate, Chief Ikeje Asogwa, who emerged winner after polling 162,360 votes.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Ignatius Okpara, Nwoye specifically commended the National Chairman of the APC, Professor Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, and members of the National Working Committee (NWC) for their support throughout the electoral process.
According to him, the backing of the party leadership made it possible for the APC to present a candidate whose popularity and acceptance among voters greatly contributed to the victory.
“We thank the National Chairman, Professor Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, and distinguished members of the National Working Committee for the tremendous support and encouragement given to us to pick a candidate that made our job easy,” Nwoye said.
“Our candidate was a fantastic product that needed no much advertisement to market.”
The APC chieftain also praised Governor Peter Mbah, whom he described as the leader of the party in Enugu State, for creating an enabling political environment that ensured a peaceful and hitch-free election across the six local government areas that make up the senatorial district.
Chief Asogwa was declared winner of the by-election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after securing 162,360 votes out of the total 184,094 votes cast
.
His closest challenger, Dr. Nestor Ezeme of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), garnered 9,299 votes to place second in the contest.
Nwoye further expressed appreciation to APC members and supporters across the zone for their commitment and participation in the electoral process despite adverse weather conditions.
“Your massive turnout and participation on Saturday, despite the heavy downpour, speaks volumes of your love for our great party, the APC, and the nation’s democratic process,” he stated.
“We are indeed grateful to you all for believing in our party. I want to assure you that the national leadership of the APC under the watch of our amiable National Chairman, Professor Yilwatda, will not take this for granted.”
He also expressed confidence that the senator-elect would effectively represent the people of Enugu North Senatorial District at the National Assembly.
“Be rest assured that your incoming Distinguished Senator, Ikeje Asogwa, will make you and your zone proud at the hallowed Green Chamber of the National Assembly,” Nwoye added.
The APC’s victory in the by-election is being viewed by party leaders as a significant political milestone in Enugu State and a demonstration of growing support for the ruling party in the South-East region.
