The Enugu State Police Command has arrested three male suspects in separate operations across Nsukka and 9th Mile areas of the state, recovering locally made firearms, live ammunition, a motorcycle, and other incriminating items.

According to a press statement issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the arrests were made during sustained proactive policing operations aimed at combating crime and criminality in the state.

The statement disclosed that on May 19, 2026, operatives attached to the Surveillance Team of Okpuje Division intercepted one Sunday Okwumaji, 23, during a stop-and-search operation at Ovogovo in Nsukka Local Government Area.

A search conducted on the suspect reportedly led to the recovery of a locally made pistol loaded with one live cartridge concealed in his bag.

Police said the suspect, who hails from Alogwugwu in Igala-Mela Local Government Area of Kogi State, claimed to be a firearm repairer and alleged that the firearm was handed over to him for repairs by its owner, who is currently at large.

In another operation carried out the same day at about 5:00 p.m., operatives of the Command’s Distress Response Squad intercepted a motorcycle carrying three occupants along the Abor/Nsukka Old Road in the 9th Mile area.

The police said two suspects, including the motorcycle rider, escaped during an attempted search, while one Chimobi Ozo, 27, was arrested.

Recovered from his bag were a locally fabricated revolver pistol and four live cartridges.

According to the statement, the suspect confessed to involvement in cult-related activities and disclosed that he and his fleeing accomplices were on their way to a secret cult gathering at Ijebuoghene in Udi Local Government Area before they were intercepted.

Meanwhile, operatives attached to the Nsukka Area Command also arrested one Ekene Alphous Ugwu, 31, following an earlier recovery of a firearm and other exhibits.

Police said the suspect had abandoned a ladies motorcycle and a bag while fleeing from operatives on surveillance patrol along Amaenu Edem, Nsukka, on May 15, 2026.

A search of the bag reportedly led to the recovery of a locally made pistol, one live cartridge, bunches of keys, a suspected illicit drug device, torchlight, spanners, and an iron cutter.

The suspect was later tracked and arrested on May 16 following credible intelligence.
The Command stated that efforts were ongoing to arrest the fleeing suspects, adding that all arrested persons would be arraigned upon the conclusion of investigations.

The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, commended the operatives for their vigilance and professionalism, while reiterating the Command’s commitment to sustaining the fight against crime in the state.

He also urged residents to remain law-abiding and continue providing credible and timely information to security agencies.
