Enugu Strengthens Push for Sustainable Maternal and Newborn Health Services

Enugu State has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening sexual, reproductive, maternal and neonatal health (SRMNH) services as stakeholders gathered for the dissemination of findings from the SRMNH midline assessment recently held in the state.

The meeting, supported by the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), provided an opportunity for stakeholders to review progress, identify gaps and chart practical strategies for improving access to quality and sustainable health services for women and newborns across the state.

In his welcome address, the Hon. Commissioner for Health, Enugu State, Prof. George Ugwu, commended CHAI for conducting the CHOICES midline assessment in the state, describing the initiative as an important step towards building a stronger and more resilient health commodity market capable of supporting sustained delivery of SRMNH services.

Prof. Ugwu expressed appreciation to His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Enugu State, Barr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, for creating a conducive environment for health-sector programmes and interventions to thrive across the state.

He highlighted the administration’s continued investment in the health sector, noting that the Governor’s commitment has continued to drive improvements in healthcare infrastructure and service delivery.

The Commissioner also disclosed that the state’s 300-bed International Hospital would shortly commence operations, describing the development as another significant milestone in the administration’s efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery in Enugu State.

The Reproductive Health Coordinator in the Enugu State Ministry of Health, Dr. Douglas Nwagbo, outlined the objectives of the meeting, stressing the importance of examining the midline findings and using the evidence generated to guide future interventions and strengthen SRMNH outcomes.

The CHAI representative from Abuja also provided an overview of the CHOICES project, explaining that its implementation focuses on four key areas: coordination, data-system strengthening, products and supply chain, and product introduction.

These components, he explained, are designed to address critical system gaps and improve the availability and accessibility of essential commodities required for quality reproductive, maternal and neonatal health services.

The CHAI Programme Manager in Enugu State presented the SRMNH midline assessment findings, highlighting key areas requiring sustained attention, including human resources for health, equipment and essential consumables.

The discussions also examined SRMNH service delivery and health infrastructure, with stakeholders reviewing existing strengths, challenges and opportunities for improvement.

The assessment findings provided an evidence base for understanding the current state of SRMNH services and identifying areas where targeted interventions could produce measurable improvements.

The dissemination meeting ended with stakeholders emphasising the need for stronger collaboration, evidence-based planning and sustained investment in health commodities, infrastructure, human resources and service delivery.

Participants agreed that translating the assessment findings into actionable interventions would be critical to improving reproductive, maternal and neonatal health outcomes in Enugu State.

The meeting therefore marked an important step in strengthening the state’s health system and ensuring that women, mothers and newborns have sustained access to quality and essential healthcare services.
