Good Samaritan Alleges Harassment, Extortion by Police After Attempt to Save Dying Man in Asaba

A Nigerian citizen, Tomi Akporoghene Wojuola, has recounted a harrowing experience with officers of the Nigerian Police Force after he acted as a good Samaritan by rushing a collapsed young man to the hospital in Asaba, Delta State.

According to Wojuola, the incident occurred earlier in the year 2025 when he noticed a young man who had collapsed on the road and was visibly dying.

While passersby ignored the situation, he contacted a doctor for advice and, acting on that guidance, rushed the victim to the hospital in an effort to save his life, but sadly, the young man was pronounced dead on arrival.

Wojuola said that, in line with standard protocol and because he did not know the deceased personally, he requested that the police be informed.

He was subsequently taken to the GRA Police Station in Asaba to give a report. However, instead of being treated as a witness, he alleged that he was accused of murder, with his statement taken under caution.

He further alleged that the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Joseph Udoh, verbally harassed him during the process, allegedly telling him that he would be “dealt with” for acting like “Jesus.”

Wojuola claimed the officer warned that the experience would discourage him from helping dying persons in the future.

This, he said, was despite confirmation from the deceased’s family that their son had an underlying medical condition.

The situation, according to Wojuola, only changed after the intervention of a very senior government official who personally came to attest to his innocence and secure his release.

Even then, he alleged that officers of the Asaba GRA Division extorted him under the guise of bail, leaving him with only ₦2,000 from his bank account.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Wojuola expressed gratitude to God for his freedom, noting that many Nigerians remain incarcerated over cases he described as less severe.

He also said the experience helped him understand why many citizens now choose to record emergencies rather than intervene, for fear of being victimised by law enforcement.
