The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced the promotion of a total of 74,352 officers across various ranks nationwide from January 2025 to date, describing the exercise as one of the most extensive in recent times.
A summary released by the Force Public Relations Department and obtained by EnuguDaily shows that the promotions cut across both senior and junior cadres, reflecting what the Police leadership describes as a structured system that rewards diligence, professionalism and proven capacity.
At the apex of the promotions, 11 officers were elevated from Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) to Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG), while 45 Commissioners of Police (CPs) were promoted to AIG.
Also promoted were 69 Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) to CP, and 156 Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) to DCP.
Further down the officer cadre, 270 Chief Superintendents of Police (CSPs) moved up to ACP, 1,014 Superintendents of Police (SPs) to CSP, 615 Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) to SP, and 980 Assistant Superintendents of Police II (ASP II) to DSP. In addition, 13,496 ASP II officers were promoted to ASP I.
The bulk of the promotions occurred within the inspectorate and rank-and-file categories.
According to the breakdown, 30,828 Inspectors were promoted to ASP II, 16,970 Sergeants to Inspectors, 8,840 Corporals to Sergeants, and 58 Police Constables to Corporal.
Reacting to public speculation surrounding the exercise, the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, dismissed allegations of irregularities, insisting that the process was transparent and merit-based.
“We will not be swayed by those who trade in falsehood or seek to undermine the integrity of our institution. There is no promotion scandal in the Nigeria Police Force. What we have is a system that rewards diligence, professionalism and proven capacity,” the IGP said.
The Force Public Relations Department noted that the promotions are aimed at boosting morale, enhancing operational efficiency, and strengthening internal discipline within the Nigeria Police Force as it continues to tackle security challenges across the country.
