The Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has condemned reported attacks on members and coordinators of the party and the Obidient Movement in Delta State, describing the incidents as disturbing and unacceptable in a democracy.
In a press statement, Obi said the victims were exercising their democratic rights and stressed that political violence, intimidation and destruction of property had no place in a democratic society.
He maintained that no political ambition was worth the life of any Nigerian, adding that political authority should be secured through persuasion and the confidence of the electorate rather than thuggery and fear.
The former Anambra State Governor called on the government and security agencies to immediately investigate the attacks, identify those responsible and ensure they are brought to justice, irrespective of their political affiliations.
He also assured affected members that the NDC would not be intimidated or surrender its democratic space to violence, insisting that its response would remain peaceful, lawful and determined.
Obi reaffirmed that every Nigerian has the right to organise, assemble, express opinions and freely elect political leaders, regardless of party affiliation.
He called for a political environment driven by constructive ideas, responsible leadership, justice, liberty and respect for the dignity of citizens, while expressing solidarity with those affected by the attacks in Delta State.
