Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Belém, Brazil, for Abuja after representing President Bola Tinubu at the 30th Session of the United Nations Climate Change Conference.
The Vice President’s visit to the South American nation marked the conclusion of a series of high-level engagements focused on global climate action and sustainable development.
The conference was held from November 6 to 7 in Belém, the capital of Pará State, in the Brazilian Amazon.
During the conference, hosted by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in collaboration with the United Nations and other partners, Shettima addressed the Leaders’ Climate Summit and delivered Nigeria’s statement titled “The Rational Soul of Nature.”
During the summit, Shettima joined other world leaders, development partners, and business executives at the Leaders’ Climate Summit, where he reaffirmed Nigeria’s resolve to take the lead in driving climate action efforts across Africa and beyond.

In his address, the Vice President highlighted Nigeria’s ongoing initiatives and renewed commitment to tackling climate challenges, describing the country’s climate agenda as “not just an aspiration, but a solemn national commitment to preserve the planet for future generations.”
Shettima also represented Tinubu at a high-level thematic session titled “Climate and Nature: Forests and Oceans” on the margins of COP30, where he delivered Nigeria’s statement titled “The Rational Soul of Nature.”
In his remarks, Shettima urged global partners to “recognise the economic value of nature and to channel significant finance towards protecting and restoring it through predictable, equitable, and accessible funding mechanisms.”
The vice president is expected back in the country on Sunday.
