Police Arraign Social Media User Over Alleged Cyberbullying of Enugu SSG

The Enugu State Police Command has arraigned a 41-year-old social media user, Chijinkem Ugwuanyi, popularly known on Facebook as “Sen Chijinkem Ugwuanyi,” over alleged cyberbullying, stalking and defamatory publication against the Secretary to the Enugu State Government (SSG), Prof. Chidiebere Onyia.

Ugwuanyi was brought before a Magistrate Court in Enugu on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, following investigations into a Facebook post he allegedly made on January 15, 2026.

According to the police, the post falsely attributed a controversial statement to the SSG, claiming that some individuals were “meant to be used to win elections, while some are meant to be given appointments and political dividends.”

The suspect was also said to have attached the photograph of Prof. Onyia to the publication.

According a press release by Enugu Police Command Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ndukwe, police investigations revealed that the statement was not made by the SSG.

Although the suspect reportedly admitted to making the post, he was unable to provide any evidence to support the claim that the SSG made the alleged statement.

Consequently, the court ordered that Ugwuanyi be remanded at a Correctional Centre, while the case file was forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, cautioned social media users to exercise restraint and responsibility in their online engagements.

He warned against cyberbullying, stalking and the dissemination of defamatory content capable of inciting hatred or disturbing public peace, stressing that such offences would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

The police reiterated their commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting individuals and public institutions from cyber-related offences in the state.
