The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a suspected drug courier and recovered a large quantity of illicit drugs during routine security patrols in parts of Enugu metropolis.
Operatives attached to the Command’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Squad arrested one Desmond Obodo Chilota, a 27-year-old male, at about 6:13 a.m. on Saturday, January 18, 2026, while on patrol in the Uwani area of the state capital. The suspect was reportedly disguised as a dispatch rider and was conveying a large consignment of highly restricted tramadol drugs on a red Kymco motorcycle, which was recovered at the point of arrest.
In a related development during the same patrol at about 7:12 a.m., the operatives recovered an abandoned bag containing substances suspected to be crystal methamphetamine, popularly known as “Mkpuru-mmiri,” along with an Android mobile phone at Onu-Asata, Ogui area of Enugu. The suspected drug dealers reportedly fled the scene upon sighting the police.
The Police said efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects, while the arrested suspect and all recovered exhibits, including the motorcycle, are undergoing further investigation.
Reaffirming the Command’s resolve to combat drug-related and other criminal activities, the Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, psc, assured residents of sustained patrols and intelligence-led operations across the state. He also called on members of the public to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and to continue supporting the Police in the fight against crime.
The development underscores the Command’s continued clampdown on illicit drug trafficking and related offences in Enugu State.
