The National Association of Seadogs (Pyrates’ Confraternity) Walrus X deck, Ikorodu, Lagos, has advised the students of Ilajo Community Secondary School, Igbogbo, Ikorodu, Lagos, to harness the benefits of social media.
Speaking at a celebration of the International Day for Education 2024, a member of the association, Onome Unumeri, advised the students to use social media to acquire more knowledge on academics and school activities.
Unumeri, who spoke on ‘The effects of social media and technology on our youth today,’ maintained that “educational information and sharing of such, creating awareness on mental health, knowledge of global events are some of the benefits of social media.
“Distraction, cyberbullying, and pornography reduce physical and productive activities. Ensure you engage yourselves with information that will benefit you.”
“We are a non-religious organisation. We’re also apolitical. We are a social crusader who ensures equality and human rights are upheld,” he said.
The organiser of the programme, Solomon Ogaa, said, “We want to use this opportunity to make the students know the essence of education. We also want to inform the government that a school of this magnitude doesn’t have basic infrastructure and a lot needs to be done. We’re calling on the governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to look in the direction of this community. We have donated exercise books, mathematical sets, biros, and a sum of N50,000.”
The assistant coordinator of the school Mrs Funsho Olowolayemo, appreciated the association, saying the mentorship and talk on social media would empower the students on how to make the best of social media and avoid the negativities.
