The Onoli, Ugwuleshi Autonomous Community in Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State has been thrown into grief and anger following the killing of a young man, identified as 30-year-old Onuchukwu Ogbaki, in an attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen on Friday.
Community sources said the incident was the latest in a string of violent assaults that have forced many residents, particularly from Obuovia village, to abandon their farmlands.
The repeated attacks have created widespread fear and uncertainty, threatening both the livelihoods and survival of the community.
Family members confirmed that Ogbaki succumbed to his injuries around 2 a.m. on Saturday at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, where he had been rushed for treatment.
“Our brother was attacked by Fulani herdsmen while checking his farm near the Enugu-Port Harcourt Highway, close to the Enugu-Abia boundary,” said a relative, Mr. Sampson Okolie. “They have already driven many of our people away from their farms. Only a few still risk going there, and now our brother has paid with his life.”
Okolie further lamented that Obuovia village in Ugwuleshi has already been completely displaced, with herdsmen allegedly occupying their farms.
Confirming the incident, the President General of Ugwuleshi Autonomous Community, Mr. Aaron Chidi Osu, said the matter has been reported to the Enugu State Police Command.
“It is no longer news that Fulani herdsmen have been attacking my community,” Osu stated. “My people are now living in fear. They can’t go to their farms. We are calling on the state government to intervene and put an end to these constant attacks.”
The latest killing has deepened tension in the area, with residents demanding urgent action from authorities to secure lives and restore confidence in their community.
