Two Suspects Arraigned, Remanded Over UNN Bonfire Night Murder

The Enugu State Police Command has announced the arraignment of two principal suspects in connection with the fatal stabbing of 29-year-old Nweze Chiebonam during a bonfire night event at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN).

Police spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, in a statement on Thursday, said the suspects, Ezema Onyedikachi (27) and Ugwu Chigozie Anthony (21), were arraigned before a competent court on a two-count charge of conspiracy and murder and have been remanded in correctional custody.

According to the statement, the incident occurred on September 12, 2025, during a bonfire night organized by the Faculty of Arts, Department of Archaeology/Heritage Studies. The event, attended by students and invited guests, turned tragic when a minor accident involving the vehicle of Ugwu Anthony and that of the deceased sparked an altercation. Though the disagreement was initially settled, investigations revealed that the suspects allegedly left the venue, conspired, armed themselves with a dagger, and returned to attack Chiebonam.

During the assault, Ezema Onyedikachi reportedly snatched the dagger from his accomplice and stabbed the victim fatally in the chest.

Chiebonam was rushed to the hospital but was confirmed dead by a doctor. The weapon used in the attack was recovered by the police.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, described the killing as “unfortunate and avoidable,” while commiserating with the family of the deceased.

He urged citizens, especially youths, to shun violence, embrace self-control, and resolve disputes peacefully.

The suspects remain in custody as the case proceeds in court.
