Enugu Police Announce Restriction of Movement Ahead of Enugu North Senatorial Bye-Election

The Enugu State Police Command has announced restrictions on human and vehicular movement in the six local government areas of Enugu North Senatorial District ahead of the senatorial bye-election scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026.

According to a statement by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, movement will be restricted from 12:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on election day across Igbo-Etiti, Igbo Eze North, Igbo Eze South, Nsukka, Udenu and Uzo-Uwani local government areas.

According to him, the restriction, however, will not apply to electoral officials and persons engaged in verifiable essential duties.

He said the commissioner of police, CP Mamman Giwa has assured residents and voters of adequate security throughout the electoral process.

Giwa said additional security personnel had been deployed to the state on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to strengthen security arrangements for the bye-election.

According to him, the reinforcements were drawn from Zone 13 Headquarters, the Anambra State Police Command, Police College Oji River and Police Detective College Enugu, in addition to personnel already deployed from other security agencies operating in the state.

Giwa urged political parties, candidates, supporters and the electorate to conduct themselves peacefully and lawfully before, during and after the election.

He warned that acts such as thuggery, ballot-box snatching, vote-buying, violence and other electoral offences would not be tolerated, stressing that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.

The Commissioner also called on residents of the senatorial district to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious persons, activities and electoral malpractices to the nearest police station.

He expressed confidence that the security measures put in place would ensure a peaceful, orderly and credible conduct of the bye-election.
