…RECOVER DRUGS, 22 MOTORCYCLES IN ANTI-CRIME OPERATIONS
The Enugu State Police Command says it has arrested 20 suspected criminals and recovered hard drugs, 22 motorcycles, a tricycle, offensive weapons, and other incriminating exhibits during intelligence-led anti-cultism and anti-crime operations carried out across the state between July 7 and 14, 2026.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the operations targeted cultism, drug trafficking, armed robbery, and other violent crimes in different parts of Enugu State.
The statement disclosed that on July 14, operatives of the Anti-Cultism Sub-Unit of the Command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), acting on credible intelligence, raided Banana Estate in Independence Layout, Enugu, where suspected cultists operating with motorcycles and a tricycle were allegedly terrorising residents, robbing members of the public, vandalising property, and selling hard drugs.
Two suspects, identified as Ogbodo Chebe, aged 40, alleged to be a member of the Abashie Confraternity and a youth leader, and Oguma Onyebuchi, aged 27, were arrested during the operation.
Police recovered quantities of a substance suspected to be “Colos,” while other suspects reportedly fled, abandoning eight motorcycles and one tricycle, all of which were recovered.
In another operation conducted on July 7, police operatives raided criminal hideouts in the Emene and Eke Obinagu areas of Enugu, arresting six suspects.
Recovered from them were large quantities of substances suspected to be cannabis, methamphetamine, locally known as “Mkpụrụ-mmiri,” and suspected cocaine.
Earlier on the same day, police also disrupted an alleged public celebration marking the 7/7 anniversary of the Black Axe, also known as Aye, Confraternity at Owerre Eze-Oba Community in Udenu Local Government Area.
The operation led to the arrest of 12 suspects, while police recovered one axe, a set of drum instruments, and 14 motorcycles allegedly used during the gathering.
The Police Command said investigations are ongoing to arrest other fleeing suspects, determine the full extent of the alleged criminal activities, and recover additional exhibits.
It added that the suspects would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Commending the operatives for the successful operations, the Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to intelligence-driven policing aimed at combating cultism, illicit drug trafficking, and other violent crimes.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and continue providing timely and credible information to the police to enhance public safety and security across the state.
