Police Approve Dismissal, Prosecution of Officers Over Effurun Shooting

The Nigeria Police Force has announced the dismissal and planned prosecution of officers involved in the fatal shooting of Mr. Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State, on April 26, 2026.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the police said all officers linked to the incident were immediately withdrawn from the Delta State Command and transferred to Force Headquarters in Abuja for expedited disciplinary proceedings.

According to the statement, the Force Disciplinary Committee (FDC), alongside other internal disciplinary panels, found that the principal officer involved, ASP Nuhu Usman, acted in gross violation of Force Order 237 and regulations guiding the use of firearms.

The police described the officer’s conduct as unlawful, unprofessional, and a betrayal of the oath to protect lives and uphold the law.

Following the findings, the committee recommended the immediate dismissal of ASP Usman and other officers found culpable.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has approved the recommendation and forwarded it to the Police Service Commission for ratification in line with due process.

The statement added that after the completion of administrative procedures, the affected officers would be handed over to the appropriate judicial authorities for prosecution over their roles in the extrajudicial killing.

Reaffirming the Force’s position, the Inspector-General of Police said the Nigeria Police maintains zero tolerance for extrajudicial actions and abuse of power, stressing that no officer has the right to take life outside the provisions of the law.

He warned that any personnel found violating that principle would face the full weight of disciplinary and legal sanctions.

The IGP also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, assuring them that the matter would not be treated lightly and that justice would be served in a transparent manner to restore public confidence.

The police urged residents and members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, while reiterating the Force’s commitment to professionalism, accountability, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
