The Enugu State Police Command has arrested a 24-year-old man, Ugwu Desmond, for the attempted murder and rape of a pregnant woman in Affa community, Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State.
The incident occurred on the night of March 14, 2026, when the 30-year-old victim, whose identity has been withheld, was returning home from a neighbour’s house along a quiet track road in Amokwo-Affa.
According to police, the suspect trailed the woman before launching a violent attack.
He reportedly struck from behind while armed with a cutlass, forced the victim to the ground, and attempted to strangle her while covering her mouth to prevent her from raising an alarm.
The assailant then dragged her into an uncompleted building, where he threatened to kill her if she resisted, before raping her and inflicting injuries.
Despite the ordeal, the victim managed to report the incident to the police at about 6:15 a.m. on March 15, prompting swift action by operatives of the Affa Police Division, who arrested the suspect shortly after.
The police said the victim was immediately taken to a hospital for medical examination and treatment. Investigators also processed the crime scene and recovered key exhibits, including the cutlass allegedly used in the attack, as well as clothing bearing suspected blood and seminal stains.
The suspect has reportedly confessed to the crime.
The Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, described the incident as disturbing and unacceptable, assuring that a thorough investigation is underway and that the suspect will be arraigned in court upon its conclusion.
He also urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly, stressing the importance of community awareness in preventing crime.
Police spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Sunday in Enugu.
