Two Suspected ATM Card Swappers Arrested in Enugu

The Enugu State Police Command has arrested two suspected ATM debit card swappers and fraudsters in Enugu following an incident at a commercial bank along Okpara Avenue.

The suspects, identified as Onyeka Timothy, 34, and Philip Chima Nwankwo, 32, were arrested by operatives attached to the Central Police Station on May 11, 2026, at about 10:50 a.m.

According to the Police, the suspects were caught after allegedly swapping the ATM debit card of a female customer while pretending to assist her with a transaction at the ATM point.

The victim reportedly raised an alarm shortly after the incident, attracting the attention of an angry mob which allegedly attacked the suspects before police operatives intervened and rescued them.

Police spokesperson, Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed in a statement on Wednesday that a TVS tricycle allegedly used by the suspects for the operation and the victim’s swapped ATM debit card were recovered from them.

He added that the suspects confessed to the crime during preliminary investigations and would be arraigned in court after the conclusion of investigations.

Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police, Mamman Bitrus Giwa, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to combating financial and cyber-related crimes across the state.

The Police Commissioner also warned residents against taking the law into their own hands by assaulting suspects, urging members of the public to hand over suspects to law enforcement agencies for proper investigation and prosecution
