Enugu State Governor, Dr Peter Mbah, has called on the police to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into reports of violence surrounding a recent political gathering in the state, including a shooting that reportedly left a citizen injured.

The governor made the call in an address to the people of Enugu, expressing concern over the reported incident and its l on those affected.

“I am deeply concerned by the reports of violence surrounding the recent political gathering in Enugu, particularly the shooting that left a citizen injured,” Mbah said.
He added that his immediate concern was for those who had been hurt, people who experienced fear, and families affected by the incident.

“I want to assure them that their safety and well-being matter to me personally,” the governor stated.

Mbah said incidents of violence could cause anxiety among residents, noting that the peace and security of the state deserved to be protected.

“Every citizen, whatever their political affiliation, must be able to exercise their political rights without fear or violence,” he said.

Addressing allegations of government involvement in the incident, the governor said the state government had already made its position known, while emphasising its responsibility to protect lives and uphold the law.

“The Enugu State Government has made its position clear regarding allegations of involvement in this violence. Our fundamental responsibility as a government is to protect lives, uphold the law, and ensure that justice is pursued without favour,” Mbah said.

He further urged the police to investigate the incident thoroughly and impartially, referring to the state’s preliminary findings.
“In furtherance of our preliminary findings regarding the incident, I expect the police to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation,” he stated.

The governor also said anyone established to have been responsible for the reported acts would face the appropriate legal process, irrespective of political connections.
